I Wish I Could Write More: Changing My Routine

My journaling routine has changed a lot through the years. I started journaling when I was nine. I would write every day, but there were times when I would skip a few weeks every now and then.

Since starting my online business, it seems like every minute of every day counts. I’m leaning more towards writing for money rather than writing for the pleasure of writing. (And I still continue to write and journal for pleasure far more than the average person).

My current writing routine consists of:

  • Writing blogs (on Medium and my website, both of which are monetized platforms).

  • Business journal (describing my daily wins, challenges and obstacles)

  • Planner Perfect TN Scripting (a long form of planning which describes or manifests how I want my day to look)

  • Daily journaling (my thoughts, feelings, events - basically anything I want to write about except for business stuff)

Prior, I also had a hobonichi which I stopped at the end of 2024. I replaced that with the Planner Perfect System, which I’m currently loving.

My current discontentment stems from my daily journaling routine. When I was younger, I would write literal pages and pages nightly. I would sit at the kitchen table with my stickers, a cup of Sleepytime tea and my journal and just write out everything that was on my heart and my mind.

With kids, this has changed a little bit. I have now taken to journaling in the morning before my kids wake up. I consider it a part of my morning routine. The problem is, I have limited time in the morning, because I usually have work projects I need to work on at this same time.

Ideally, I would love to get back to scripting and journaling right before bed (after I write out my planner tasks for the next day). I would like to take as long as I need to just sit, relax, sip tea and write like I used to. What’s holding me back? Exhaustion. At the end of the day, my husband wants to watch tv with me (I usually watch tv for about twenty minutes a day - while we’re eating dinner). Most of the time, I want to read a book.

I am trying to figure out what would work for me. I’m currently also working on getting to bed earlier, which leaves even less time. I could rotate maybe…one night I could sit and watch t.v. with my husband, the next night I could journal and the third night I could read. I might try this for a month or so and see how it works for me.

Do you have a journaling routine? How do you do it if you have kids?

Thanks for reading and we’ll see you next week!
