Morning Pages: Eight Months Later - How It’s Going

I first heard about morning pages from Jenny Penton - founder and CEO of Planner Perfect - a company of which not only am I an ambassador with, but I also use and love the products. You can check out my YouTube video with my latest travellers notebook here.

I did some research, and began a twelve week project based off of Julia Cameron’s The Artist Way, a book which goes into great deal about being a blocked artist and how to overcome the block.

By the end of that blog, I was very grateful to be done. I found the information to not be helpful in my situation, because I am not a blocked artist, but my takeaway from the entire thing is that morning pages were very helpful and something I enjoyed doing.

If you haven’t read my previous blog on morning pages, and don’t know what they are, here you go.

Morning pages are three full pages of stream of consciousness writing as soon as you wake up, before indulging in any other media - that includes books, podcasts, music or your phone.

In my case, it’s similar to a journal because that is simply how I journal - I write down everything that comes to mind.

While I definitely haven’t solved problems like world peace while writing my morning pages, I do feel more calm and less anxious and I can start each day with a clear head. (That is, if I get to morning pages first).

In my work, oftentimes, I am filming content first thing in the morning (I have young kids and the quiet mornings are good for many things - one of them being filming as well as morning pages).

I do cheat however - I find it very relaxing to listen (and kind of watch) my favourite planning people on YouTube while I do my morning writing. It’s not what you’re supposed to do, but in my opinion, the rules are that you should create your own rules and do what makes you happiest.

I treat morning pages as a time of quiet, solitude and peace (without others talking in the background), and it helps to ground me before I have to do all my other tasks.

Will I continue? Absolutely. I have tried to make this a static daily habit. The only time I didn’t write was when I was travelling or just super busy over the holidays.

Do I recommend it? Absolutely! In a world where our phones dictate our every move, and the digital is taking over analogue planning, I think it’s necessary to try morning pages for yourself and to see what answers you may find within your writing. I mean, what harm is there?

Thanks for reading and we’ll see you next week!

Sandra
