Hello and welcome! So, at the the current time of writing, I don't know what the weather is going to look like at this point in time. Usually, by the start of September, we usually have cooler mornings and evenings and the day time is usually still very hot and dry - we call it wasp or forest fire season.
However, the weather this year has been very different from the last few years. The cyclical change of plentiful rainfall and significant seasonal storms has brought on (yes, wildfires), but also lots of mosquitos and maybe even a longer growing season. At this point, it's just speculation because again, from the time of writing, I have no idea what the weather will hold for us.
I do know however, that at this point in time, the kids start school on September first (tomorrow!) of this year, and it's certainly going to be a transition. Not only is my daughter starting full days at school, my son is entering Grade 7 and is in a completely new school all together. My little one will be home with me all day by himself now, so I think it will be hard on him also. Who knows - maybe he will like the change because then I can focus more on him throughout the day and there will be less fighting for sure!
This time of year is always hard for me. My favourite season is summer, and although the cooler nightly temperatures are better for sleeping, I miss summer with a vengeance - even though it's technically not over until closer to the end of this month.
Our seasonal autumn is generally pretty short - the leaves start turning yellow at the end of August due to the night time cooling, and by the time the end of September comes, the leaves turn brown, the wind comes and then the leaves are on the ground.
We don't usually have time to get into the fall season even before it starts feeling like Halloween and winter! Forget those pictures you see of cozy sweaters and hot lattes!
I also find the back to school season a hard transition. While it's easier for me to get back into a routine (I get up at 5am, get the kids to school and then I have time to work and do what I need to do), I find it weird that while it still feels like summer, the kids are already back at school. The house feels a little bit emptier, and it stays cleaner for longer.
Despite trying to take advantage of the hot summer days (when it wasn't raining), the days of no routines and sleeping in a lot gave me a definite feeling of overwhelm. I was so overwhelmed in fact, that despite having good planner systems in place and writing multiple brain dumps over the summer, I felt extremely disorganized and like nothing got done. This is not exactly an exaggeration either - I was so overwhelmed with my kid's mess each day that I gave up and just left it. I can literally say (and at the time of writing I don't feel ashamed to admit this because I literally could care less) - my house is a pigsty.
I expect this to change drastically with the back to school season ahead though. I will have more time during the day to work - getting up at 5am is no joke (I am a very productive morning person), and I won't have the kids distracting me - they will be at school!
The long summer days are over, and the kids have to go to bed earlier - it also means that I have to go to bed earlier and it's not the same as relaxing and doing all the summer things that I love. Although each year, we somehow get through it and move through the transition until the next summer comes!
How is this transition for you where you live? Do your routines change too? Do you also feel a little reminiscent of a summer that's gone?
Thanks so much for reading and we'll see you next time!
Sandra
