Welcome back my friends! Since I usually try and post one of these videos every season, here we go. The only problem is, if I ever express negativity, it is especially at this time of year. Ironically, I’m writing this on September 22, 2021, the first day of Autumn. As you may know, fall is NOT my favorite time of year. I’m so confused as to why a lot of people like it. To me, it smells of death and cold. (Depressing, I know; maybe that’s my Seasonal Affective Disorder rearing its ugly head). It’s true though - there are less bugs, less summer bird sounds and I watch more and more geese flying south every day.
One of the things I hate the most is how the mornings and nights are freezing and the day is over 20 degrees. I hated it during school, because I never wore the right thing - I was either always too cold, or too hot. I hate it now, for the same reason because I send my son to school, but also - the wasps are so bad during the warmer afternoon that you can’t sit outside anyway. Also, the plants stop growing as fast, so you know those peppers you REALLY want to harvest before frost? Well, none of them are big enough to eat.
But, I digress…Let’s chat about all of my FAVORITE things now.
-
Hot Beverages
There’s something to be said about the cold, and holding a delicious hot beverage in your hands. My favorites are hot chocolate, cappuccino or white mocha’s.
-
Warm Clothes
I live in Alberta, Canada - need I say more? Yes, it would be amazing to be in a climate where it is summer every day. It is also pretty comfy to wear big cozy sweaters and cuddle up under a warm blanket when the tip of your nose is chilly.
-
Having the furnace come on
So maybe this is just our furnace (we seriously need some good cleaning done), but you know that initial “first” dust smell that only comes when your furnace turns on for the first time after the summer. Love it.
-
Warm blankets with the window open
I know this is not efficient, but I love having the windows open to get that nice fresh air, but having the house warm and toasty. This is especially nice when I’m cuddled and warm and toasty in bed, but my nose is chilly from the ambient air in my room when I wake up
-
Mukluks
I bought my very first pair with multiple Christmas Gift cards I had saved up. This was many years after the “fashion statement” of wearing mukluks was no longer on trend. Turns out they keep your feet really toasty and warm, and I think they’re beautiful. You do need to treat them with a leather spray and a protectant to keep out snow/water/moisture though.

You can breath better
So even though I’m a summer gal, through and through (love heat over cold any day of the week), I can breath a lot better. We had quite a few heat warnings this summer and it was unbearable without an air conditioner.
-
Autumn scents at Bath & Body Works
These are my very favorite scents. Absolute favorites are Marshmallow Fireside, Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte and Salted Caramel Apricot.
-
Burning Candles
I never seem to burn candles during the summer months. I usually have my plug-ins from Bath & Body Works going year round to make the house smell good. There’s something about a candle in the heart of autumn that makes the house feel cozy.
-
Holiday Season
I know this is a bigger thing in the States than it is here in Canada, because of the separation of Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, at this time of year, everyone is thinking about the upcoming holidays - what to eat, buy, bake, decorate, etc…We may have another quiet season, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t talk through e-mail, Zoom and Face chat, and enjoy our family time at home.
-
Winter/Fall Perfumes
If you are a perfume magnet like myself, you will know that scents are seasonal. I have many different perfumes for every season, but gourmands (the ones that smell like food, or chocolate and vanilla or caramel) are my very favorite at this time of year.
-
Good movies/tv shows and books
I can’t put a name to any of these currently as none really pertain to fall. But, since it is getting colder outside, I’m more likely to curl up in a nook with a warm throw and a good book.
-
Hot Showers
Again, this is inefficient and very drying for your skin, but when you’re cold, nothing warms me up faster than having a nice warm shower. I can’t take the water too hot, but just until my core body temperature has warmed up.
That’s it for now. Until next time!
