Hello, welcome back to the blog! We will talk about how my journaling style has changed recently, and a few different things you can do to vent emotions and get the creative juices flowing! I still journal in a regular notebook every day (my current one is one of my Peter Pauper Press Artisan Journals)
So as I was saying, I still continue to journal in a regular lined notebook every day. If it’s in the morning, I usually confirm my goals for the day and write my daily intentions. This is simply to get my mind in the work mode, and is part of my morning planner routine. Sometimes I will talk about what happened the previous day if there was something memorable or exciting that happened.
Recently I purchased a Hobonichi Cousin, and I’ll tell you why. Yes, the Hobonichi is considered a planner, but I have seen some amazing inspiration videos online where people use these “planners” as a daily journal. The paper is called Tomoe River paper, and is a type of “man-made” stone paper, made out of sulphite. Apparently, this paper was used in Japanese binders. It is so thin and transparent, and yet holds up to the ink from my fountain pens.
It’s easy to get caught up in the hype online and on Instagram. Once you see all the pretty pictures and things, you may want to jump online and add to cart right away. I usually think about my purchases first, but all the Inspo had me at “journal”!
I purchased a Franklin Covey Classic Wirebound Vintage Aurora as a cover for my Hobonichi Cousin. It has a lot of pockets and room for stickers and deco. I stuck the back cover of the book into the planner cover and it looks beautiful!
The monthly section of the Hobonichi I use for a variety of things. Sometimes I’ll add an affirmation or daily gratitude, or a word or phrase of the day. More often I’ll add a memory or highlight for that day - it’s like a snapshot memory keeping system for that one day. Sometimes I add little stickers here (like icons - my favourite are from CoffeeMonsterzCo and Once More With Love).

The next section is the weekly section. This type of weekly is broken down into long vertical columns with the hours extended along the left hand side. I’ve never been into keeping an hourly time-blocked schedule as I have kids and they never go by a schedule like that. Instead, I use it to back-plan and show how my day went and what I did; basically a memory keeping system. I might also add pictures here one day, but have not yet.
The last section in this book are the daily pages. This is where the bulk of the journaling happens. I sometimes write about the previous day, but I honestly just write about whatever comes to mind, or what’s on my mind. I try not to feel the need to keep it positive all the time. While generally, being positive helps you to feel better, I also want to be honest with myself and my memories and be transparent and authentic. (Not for social media, but for when I look back and read it).
I use a variety of deco in this part of my planner. My favourite thing to use currently are transparent journaling stickers (to keep your planner from getting too bulky), but I love my Simply Gilded Washi Tape and regular stickers as well. I’ve never been into florals that much, but seeing them on this paper is actually quite lovely.
I will keep you guys updated on my website as to how my journal journey is progressing. Who knows - maybe it will change again in the future.
That you so much for reading and we’ll see you again next week!
