Hello! So I was having a moment of reflection from a period of getting past a very rough part of my life. I'm writing this on September 1, 2026 and I feel like I've finally come out on the other side of whatever that was. I think this is why reflection is so very important because in every circumstance in life, you can learn something from it!
So during the summer months, as per usual, our "routine" fell apart. I was so thankful that I could sleep in more than usual, and not have to worry about keeping on top of my kids with homework and strict bedtimes.
June was great, because we were gearing up for summer, and July was ok. Unrelated to today's topic - we had a lot of rain this summer, and our "summer" actually didn't even really feel like summer. The only thing weather related that was cool was we had a lot of tornado-warned storms (because of the high humidity), but nothing actually happened where I live.
By the time we got to August, I felt very disorganized, like I couldn't keep up with anything. If you have been following me for awhile, you may know that I'm a very organized person, and I'm really dedicated and motivated to stay productive at all times. Maybe this is where it all started to fall apart.
Despite saying June and July were ok, things were very overwhelming. I do have a sense that a lot of the mind work, household, and kid things fall on my shoulders to the point where it feels like I can't stand under the weight of it all. Every decision is made by me, and it gets exhausting after awhile, doing it for five people.
So by August, I was at a point where I didn't really care about anything. The house was a mess? - ok, it can be a mess tomorrow too. Like I literally didn't care and it showed and I didn't care about that either.
I did get all the back to school shopping done early - by the end of July I think, so we were all prepped for that. I kind of let go and started staying up super late (think 2am in the morning) and I read a lot (Zodiac Academy at the time). I would sleep in until 10am, or until the kids woke me up. I would do as much work on my business as I could, and then when it started to get nice outside, I would go out with the kids and play and spend time in the sun and water.
Oops! My website didn't get worked on? Oh well...I let that drop too. I literally just didn't care.
So, fast forward to the week before school started, and I started to get itchy to organize and plan and do all the things again. I was looking forward to the normalized routine of getting up early, and I was even more excited about the thought that I would have two less kids at home with me during the day.
Despite thinking on this during the last week of summer break, I soaked up as much sun as I could, continued playing with the kids, and just not taking the last bit of summer for granted.
Now that we are currently in the back to school era, looking back on that week I realized I started living in the moment. You know how they say if you live in the past, you're depressed, and if you live in the future, you're anxious. But if you live for the right now, that's one of the ways you can maintain a balance of happiness and contentment in your life. I think that's what I did during that week, because right now, I'm really reminiscing on it with rose-colored glasses on.
I learned to let go and relax! I took a break from all the nonsense! All the cooking, the cleaning, the pressure of worrying about people judging me for not doing those things - just everything. I was a bit more spontaneous and I don't know if that's my answer - I know who I am, and I'm a planner, through and through. I like to be prepared for most situations but I think being spontaneous now and then helps to reset my brain, and it recharged my energy.
For example, this first week of school, I have more time during the day because I got up at 5am - not 10am, and the kids aren't here so I don't have distractions every minute. It's really a nice change and I feel like things are going to go well from here on out.
What is your experience like with the season change and the transition change of back to school if you have kids or grandkids?
Thanks for reading!
Cheers!
Sandra
