Let’s talk about how I plan for the week. To keep things simple, I will just be referring to how I currently plan in my Franklin Planner. I also have separate routines for my business planner as well as my Planner Perfect Travellers Notebook.
So again, as with my monthly planner reset, I probably do more in my routine since I also plan for content creation (and I’m filming what I plan, and vice versa). As an everyday lay person, planning out your life, you won’t follow all the steps I do in my YouTube videos. For that reason, I will outline the basic steps that I use here:
Organize before I begin:
-
Clean and tidy my desk space so I have a clear working area. Generally, I always do this the night before anyway.
-
I will get out all the stickers, washi and supplies I need prior to beginning my planning session. I want all the tools I need on hand, and I don’t want to waste time looking for things.
-
I have all my reference material on hand - whether that’s my goal planner, my future log, or my other planners.
Review The Previous Week:
-
This is a good habit to do to see where things can be improved upon, or even to see what needs to be moved forward from the previous week.
-
Any important information should be moved to the monthly or daily index page for easy referencing, or, you can also re-write that information in your reference section/planner.
-
You can also do a review of your week on paper. The headers I use are “Achievements”, “Challenges” (“Solutions”), and “Next Week’s’ Focus”. You can change these as you see fit, but it helps to figure out what goals you have achieved and what still needs to be worked on. Also, it gives you a starting point for what you might want to tackle next week.
Review Your Goals:
-
I use the Cultivate What Matters Powersheets as my Goal Planner (I check in daily), but I also carry a copy of my most important goals in my Franklin Planner. I come here weekly to check off items that have been completed or that have progress made on them. I also use this as a kick starter for tasks I may want to start working on for that specific week.
Review Compass Card:
-
My compass card is a progressive task card that I place on the day I’m currently on in my planner. It highlights my most important tasks/goals for the week. I label these my “big rocks” and roles.
-
For example, I might add the role of “daughter” if I have a task to do for my mother.
-
Most of these tasks will be included on my weekly task list, but this is a daily reminder to DO THEM!
Reviewing The Inbox, Calendar and Monthly Master Task List:
-
I do these things in the order listed to prepare myself for planning the current week and writing out my master tasks list.
-
Despite having dedicated routines for the week and month, I do maintain my planner all the time. For example, I try to consolidate sticky notes built up throughout the day into my planner by evening. This ensures that I don’t lose any important information.
-
I will write down information in my inbox as it comes in. Or, I’ll use the inbox as a place to put tasks that don’t have a due date, but also those items that might not get done in the current month.
-
The calendar contains all of my important dates such as kids days off school and appointments.
-
The monthly master task list contains everything I hope to get done that month.
Roles and Big Rocks:
-
Now that I have all of the information forefront in my my mind, I can go ahead and create my new compass card.
Plan Week:
-
I use the Modern Grace weekly inserts from Franklin Covey. The left side has blocks for each day for the week where you can plan your appointments and events. The right side has an area for your master weekly list, and notes.
-
This is where I keep all of my weekly items. I will transfer unfinished tasks here from the previous week, and add new relevant tasks as well.
That is is for my weekly planner routine. How do you plan your week?
Thanks for reading and we’ll see you next week!
Sandra
