Well, hello there friends! Let's start off by saying I sure hope you're having a warmer spring than we are right now! As of the day of writing (Tuesday, April 28, 2026), we still have snow on the ground and it got to a high of 12 degrees celsius today.
I would have to say that this is probably the coldest spring we've had in years, and the longest winter. I would almost say it is El Nīno's counterpart, La Niña, but that condition is supposed to make it drier here in Canada, not colder and more wet.
The farmers should be happy at least - they're always saying they never have enough moisture. Well, now they have it - a slow melting cover of snow!
As for updates - the first one is I haven't started on my garden. (Haha!) So normally, I have always been told not to start gardening outside until after the May long weekend. This is because we usually had frost right up until that point. Up to a few years ago, this was true, but the last few years have proved unseasonably warm. People started to get used to this warm weather and started planting earlier and earlier. Keep in mind, some plants have much longer growing seasons, so sometimes they need to be started indoors. I think I did this once or twice, but my house is small and I no longer have room or the ability with three young kids.
I think I will start a few pepper plants indoors this weekend, but the rest will be planted after May long as per usual. I'm not taking any chances, especially this year.
Update two: My daughters birthday is this Beltane. For those of you who don't know what that is - it's when you dance around the May pole, and the Pagan holiday embraces fertility. It also happens to be the second full moon this month, which makes it a blue moon! So the beginning of May this year is even more exciting!
May is a pretty busy month for us. We have more appointments and travel things coming up than we've had in awhile. We will be going to Vancouver for another health visit for our son towards the end of the month. We were also thinking of going to Red Deer on May long to visit family. We haven't been there since Christmas and it's always nice going to the breweries when it's warm outside.
At the end of May, the kids will only have one month of school left. Our oldest will be done grade six, so he will have his graduation and his PAT's (provincial achievement tests) coming up. It will be a very busy June!
All I know is I worship the sun. Being Vitamin D deprived this long has made me crave it all the more, and I can't wait to lay outside and read while enjoying the sun.
One of my personal goals for May and June is to wake up at 4am during the week day. This would ensure I have three solid hours of work time in the morning to get everything done each day so that I can have summer fun days outside with my kids. My kids love being outside in the backyard, and the littles especially love when we have the water running.
So I will have a YouTube video each month as well, called "April Monthly Update Video", or "May Monthly Update Video". Please feel free to come to my YouTube channel and check out my face-to-face videos! You can use the link here to come visit me on my channel! https://www.youtube.com/@SandraDahl.
Thanks for reading and we'll see you again next week!
Sandra ☺️
