Hi there friends! Today, we’re going to dive into the spiritual realm (so to speak) and talk about how to create an altar. I can’t really give you a list of what you should have. I think that your altar should be personal, meaningful and intentional to you. Only you can determine what needs to be in place for this very personal project.
First of all, what is an altar? The official definition (not to be confused with alter which means to ‘make different’), is, an elevated place or structure for religious rites. In terms of spirituality, an altar consists of objects of worship. In a general sense, an altar does not have to be spiritual. It could consist of items that you love and simply wish to display in your home. (i.e. Collectibles, candles, ornaments, etc.)
I guess it comes down to your purpose for your altar. What will you be using it for? Is it simply for decoration? Would you like a quiet spot that gives you peace and mental clarity? Or is it a place to practice your craft?
In most spiritual cases, you might want to pick a quiet place and have objects that are meaningful to you in some way. They could be completely random. For example, in my altar, I have a rose quartz crystal to help me with emotional healing, and to inspire love, kindness and compassion. I also have an amethyst for mental clarity, and connection to the spiritual world. I have a little incense holder that is small enough for my space. I usually burn white sage for purification and aiding in my intuition or dragon’s blood for power, protection, healing and fire. It can help to increase the potency of ritual magic or any intentions you set. I have a variety of other objects that I have gathered throughout my life that are very personal to me.
My altar is in a place where I sit all the time. I have a tiny shelf space above my desk where I keep my objects and I can see them clearly, every single day. As for quiet, if I’m meditating, I will wait for my kids to go to bed. These items help me to focus and provide clarity for my spiritual practices.
What does your alter look like?
