Tarot Cards as a Divination Tool
Tarot cards…these are seen by many people as either a game, a tool of the Devil or, if you’re actually spiritual, they can be a useful tool for divination. What is divination, really? It is defined as seeking knowledge of the unknown (or future) by supernatural means. So what does supernatural mean? This describes anything that cannot be explained by the laws of nature. An example of this is our intuition. What gives us that gut feeling? While science explains that by saying we use a combination of past experiences and cues from the environment to make our gut decisions, a lot of people still see that as “supernatural” - it’s not based on scientific evidence or things people can see, so why believe it?
I use my intuition when it comes to tarot readings. People use tarot readings to understand life; or more thoroughly, to understand situations or events that happen to them. You would be surprised at how accurate tarot and oracle readings can be if you are intentional, focused, ask the right questions, and are using your intuition. That seems like a lot of work, but it is worth it. Most anything is worth it in the end, especially if you do a good job or work hard at something.
Most of the time, my tarot readings are accurate to my current situations. There are times however, I won’t understand them at all. Sometimes the reason behind the reading will be unveiled to me at a later date. Then I’ll have one of those “ah-ha!” moments, and I’ll see how all the pieces fit together. Sometimes it takes longer. Other times, I may not have had the right focus or intention during the reading to get a response I can understand.
When you first start out in tarot, it’s important to note that there’s always a learning curve. I don’t think the layout of the cards is important; rather, the focus and intention is the most important thing, as is the case with any aspect of magic. You should initially focus on learning the meanings of the cards. In tarot, there is what’s called the major arcana and the minor arcana. The major arcana has 22 cards and are called trump cards. These can be used in a variety of ways, but when I do get a trump card(s) in my reading, I tend to get a shiver along my backbone. In my opinion, this is the universe relaying an important message to you that would otherwise be unknown with any other card.
The easiest way to understand the minor arcana is that they are ruled by four suits: the pentacles, the wands, the swords, and the cups. There are a variety of meanings behind the minor arcana court cards, but the most reasonable is that they represent different personality characteristics we may choose to express. Some people believe they are the different people we encounter in our lives. The point of tarot however is to understand aspects of the self, and interpret the cards to explain the way you feel, or to explain certain aspects of your daily life.
As in how tarot works as a divination tool, really, it all comes down to you and your beliefs; not religion, as witchcraft can be a practice and not a religion like Wicca. If you believe in it, it works, and if you don't, it’s not the tool for you.
Thanks for reading!
